You may have already seen them if you were out and about today, but the Salvation Army is getting ready to kick off their Red Kettle campaign.
The Salvation Army does a lot for those in need in our community.
It helps people with utility and rent assistance year around.
The nonprofit tries to help as many families as possible have a Christmas they can be excited about and look forward to.
For years, the Salvation Army has set up the red kettles outside of stores and malls trying to do their part to give back to the community.
"So, all the donations in those red kettles, one hundred percent—and I love that—one hundred percent of every dollar that goes in there," said Major Randy Hartt, Northern Nevada Coordinator, The Salvation Army.
Last year, they raised $125,000 in donations.
While you may have seen them out today at a few locations, the campaign really kicks off next Thursday.
Then after Black Friday, you'll hear those bells ringing almost everywhere.
After coming off a very contentious election cycle, Major Hartt thinks the holidays will help ease people's minds.
"What a better way to unite than saying 'you know what, everybody is our neighbor'," Major Hartt said. "No matter who you voted for. No matter how things went out, we need to care for each other. And that's really what it's all about, caring for another person."
The Red Kettles are just the tip of the iceberg for the Salvation Army.
They will be collecting turkeys for their Turkey Drop at the Atlantis.
This is Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Those turkeys will be distributed to families in need for Christmas dinner.
The Salvation Army is also accepting Angel Tree registrations.
One thousand families will receive toys through this program, so kids can have something to open up on Christmas morning.
"So we'll be giving out about 10,000 toys," Major Hartt said. "It's looking to help about 4,000 children."
If you're a family in need and want to sign up, you can register in person at the Salvation Office in Reno at 1931 Sutro Street.
They are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
People will need to bring a proof of residence, 30 days of paystubs for the the entire household, and a state ID.Â
For their children, they can bring a physical copy of the birth certificate, vaccination records or Medicaid card.
For any questions you can call the office at (775) 688-4555.
