Original Story, April 24:
The Nevada State Contractors Board says an unlicensed contractor stole $160,000 from at least 14 Northern Nevada homeowners across four counties. Seventy-seven-year-old Sandra Tyler pleaded guilty earlier this month to two felony charges for taking homeowners' money under false pretenses.
The board says Tyler was was the owner of Re-Bath Reno. She signed contracts with homeowners to remodel their bathrooms, but never performed the work and transferred their money to her personal accounts. In at least one case, investigators say she strong-armed a homeowner, claiming that she would place a lean on their house unless they paid a larger deposit.
Tyler's sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 5. She could face up to nine years in prison, and may be ordered to pay more than $133,000 in restitution to the NSCB and an additional $3,800 in investigative costs.
She also was previously convicted of working as an unlicensed contractor in 2015.
“The main message we want to make sure gets out to everybody is before you hire a contractor, or start any work whatsoever, do your homework. Check our website. Make sure that that individual is a licensed contractor," said deputy executive officer David Behar.
Homeowners can verify a contractor’s license by visiting the NSCB website at this link to ensure that the contractor is licensed for the work to be performed. Homeowners who come into contact with an unlicensed contractor should call the NSCB Unlicensed Contractor Hotline at (775) 688-1141
