The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a new phone scam.
On X the Sheriff's Office says their office has seen an increase in reports of a scam where scammers are impersonating Sheriff's Office personnel to defraud victims out of money.
The scam callers identify themselves as law enforcement and tell victims they have either failed to appear for jury duty or have an outstanding citation or warrant and then demand payment from them.
In some cases scammers could even manipulate their caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from a local law enforcement agency, the Sheriff’s Office, or 911, according to the post.
The Sheriff's Office wants to remind people that they will never contact anyone asking for personal information or for any form of payment over the phone.
If anyone asks for that type of information, people are advised to end the call right away and report any information you have on the caller to law enforcement.
