The Washoe County School Board of Trustees discussed implementing new vaping prevention strategies and vape detection devices Tuesday night.

The board has decided to approve the motion to review the subject further and bring it back to the Safe and Healthy Schools Commission.

"As an advisory committee to the Board of Trustees, they have as a collective group, identified this as a priority issue," says Katherine Loudon, the Coordinator of School Counseling for the WCSD.

This includes discussions about implementing mandatory health class in middle schools, more teacher training as well as parent workshops.

Data backs up that vaping is disruptive to students in class and can also increase things like mood swings, anxiety and depression.

Also happening Tuesday night, the board decided to move forward with the single point entry and secure perimeter pilot projects at McQueen High School, Damonte Ranch High School and Sparks High School.

According to the school district, this would be a trial implemented for the 2024-2025 school year.

All elementary and middle schools already have single point entries. They also discussed security cameras being installed at middle and elementary schools in the entry ways.Â
