Wind speeds will be strong enough to topple over trucks, snap tree branches, have power outages, and delay flights with lots of turbulence. Their will also be a lot of chop on lake waters. Burned down trees from the Davis Fire burn scar could also topple over.Â
Wind gusts are already topping 60mph in Washoe Valley Tuesday morning, and they will reach their peak in the late morning early afternoon. The Reno airport is seeing wind gusts already near 40 mph.
An atmospheric river is moving through Northern California and Nevada today, but there will be more wind than rain in the valley. Atmospheric rivers are not only big rain producers, but they can also be big wind producers as well. Tuesday’s setup is a prime example of the rain shadow effect, keeping the majority of the rain in the Sierra, with hardly any spillover. It is rare to get both strong winds and rain at the same time in Reno.
