There was one new film in wide release this weekend, and it wasn't enough to take down "Wonka," whose box office keeps getting sweeter weekend after weekend.
Save for one weekend where it ceded the weekend crown to "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," "Wonka" has held the number one spot since its release in early December.
This weekend, "Wonka" brought in another $14.4 million, bringing its North American box office total to nearly $165 million. At this point, $200 million domestic seems in range.
Outside the U.S. "Wonka" has been an even bigger success, grossing more than $301 million, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $466 million.
In second is the new horror movie "Night Swim" from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, who released "M3gan" to stellar box office at this time last year.
"Night Swim" wasn't nearly as successful as "M3gan," which made $30 million in its debut. "Night Swim" brought in $12 million, but it was made for less than that meaning profitability is all but assured.
Reception for "Night Swim" was soggy from both critics and audiences, likely playing into the fact that it made about a third of what "M3gan" made in its first weekend. Internationally "Night Swim" added nearly $6 million for a global take of nearly $18 million so far.
From a haunted swimming pool to the king of the ocean, the weekend's third place film "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is also heavy on the water.
In weekend three the superhero sequel continues drowning, losing nearly 42% from last weekend for $10.6 million. That allowed the flick to limp past $100 million domestically, which is still less than half of its estimated budget, not taking into account marketing costs.
International audiences have been kinder, spending nearly $235 million to see Jason Momoa defend the seas. Worldwide the film has made nearly $335 million so far.
In fourth, Universal and Illumination Entertainment's "Migration" has continued to perform well after a soft first weekend. The film added another $10.2 million to its coffers this weekend for a North American total of nearly $78 million thus far.
Outside the U.S. "Migration" has flown to nearly $73 million for a worldwide total of nearly $151 million so far.
Rounding out the top five is the romantic comedy "Anyone but You." This is another movie that opened weakly a few weeks ago but has proven to have staying power, with its box office actually growing week after week.
In its third weekend, "Anyone but You" saw a nearly 9% boost in ticket sales, bringing in $9.5 million.
That brings its gross in the U.S. to nearly $44 million so far. The film has already blown past many analysts' expectations for what it would make in its entire run, and if it keeps performing like it has been, who knows how much it could make?
International receipts have been decidedly tamer at $14.7 million. So far globally the film has made more than $58 million.
