Russia and Ukraine have begun a localized ceasefire in a southern Ukrainian city to allow a humanitarian mission. The truce, brokered by U.S. first lady Melania Trump, aims to allow the delivery of aid later this week to the city of Oleshky, where supplies have run dangerously low. Despite the ceasefire, Russia continues missile attacks on other cities. Meanwhile, Finland’s president and Norway’s prime minister spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and later with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Nordic leaders described their talks with Putin as “frank and substantive.” The Oleshky ceasefire is expected to last through Saturday, but its success remains uncertain.
Officials say that a six-day ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine has held for its first day and night. The truce began Tuesday and aims to provide food, medicine and evacuation for about 2,000 residents. It will be the first significant truce since Russia’s full-scale invasion began nearly five years ago. That's if it's successful. U.S. first lady Melania Trump brokered the humanitarian mission and Pope Leo XIV urged the provision of aid and safe evacuations. The war rages on elsewhere with Russian drone strikes in Kharkiv and Ukrainian drones downed in Russia.
