The City of Yerington Public Works is notifying residents that uranium levels found at the California Well (Well #7) slightly exceeded the US EPA Maximum Contaminant Level of 0.030 mg/L.

On September 11, 2023 a sample showed that the water was found to be at 0.037 mg/L. However, the city is assuring that this is not an emergency situation.

"Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation," the City of Yerington said in a public notice shared on Friday.

The Public Works department is working with the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to solve the problem, and have taken the well offline.

Residents do not need to boil their water or take other corrective actions. However, people with specific health concerns, or who may be at an increased risk due to having a severely compromised immune system, an infant, or pregnancy, should seek advice from their healthcare provider about drinking this water.

More information on how the city is addressing the problem can be found in the notice linked below:

The water will be tested on quarterly frequency from 2023 Q4 into the future.
