Car crashes continue to be the leading cause of death among teens between 16 and 20 years of age.

The tragic death of two teens in Sparks this past weekend is another reminder of how big this problem is.

A crash near Sparks and Baring Boulevards took the lives of a 16-year-old driver Giovvani Oliva of Reno and 17-year-old Justyn Lopez-Florez of Fernley at around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Officers found the two teens dead in the car after they had crashed into a tree.

The Nevada Office of Public Safety wants all parents to realize that accidents like these are preventable.“I think number one is that we have a teen driving restriction from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. It's absolutely imperative that you follow that to the letter of the law,” says PIO Andrew Bennett.

Those curfews are designed to keep our young drivers safe and alive, especially during the summer holiday driving season.

They Sparks Police Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) is investigating.
