One bar was cited for serving underage volunteers attempting to purchase alcohol as a part of a compliance test.
On Saturday, members of the Regional Street Enforcement Team (SET) sent two 20-year-old volunteers and one 19-year-old volunteer to twenty-three different locations to attempt to purchase alcohol. When asked, the underage volunteers would provide their actual state issued identification card, clearly showing that they were not of legal drinking age.
This project was funded with federal grant funds secured by the Reno Police Department's non-profit partner Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN).
The criminal penalty for serving alcohol to a minor and allowing a minor into a bar or saloon are misdemeanors with a pre-set fine of $500. The SET and JTNN will now meet with the failing businesses to discuss strategies to improve compliance and prevent alcohol service to those under 21.
The Reno Police Department said in a news release that they "would like to thank the businesses who successfully passed the compliance operation for their diligence and ensuring underage minors were not served alcohol." Their news release also issued the following list of locations that participated in the compliance operation.
