Reed Raiders Fifth Annual Punkin' Chunkin'

Reed Raiders exhibit their metal working and engineering skills at the fifth annual Punkin' Chunkin' event.

The event is an exhibition of skills for the S.T.E.M. students at Reed High School; adding in a little destruction and competition as the student led teams design and assemble their very own rig to launch pumpkins from.

"So each one of the teams design and build a rig from the ground up and they come out to see how far they can throw the pumpkins." Said Tim Conley, Metal Working and Engineering Instructor, Reed High School.

As the fifth year of the Punkin' Chuckin' event, Conley says every year there are fresh faces eager to construct a rig of their own.

"This is pretty much a two month process. The kids designed everything, usually on the computer with 3D modeling and 3D prints with dimensions and then they come out and build everything." Conley shared about the process.

Conley says there are new faces every year who are eager to build an innovative rig and be able to fling a pumpkin the furthest.

"It's some serious structural iron work, they have to lift the beams up and weld them in place. It's pretty intense for the big ones." Said Conley.
