On Saturday, officers from the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, Washoe County Sheriff's Office and University of Nevada Police Department all took place in a regional street racing operation.Â
"Numerous complains that we've had in the area, not only from speeding vehicles, speed contests but also from people disturbing the peace," says Lt. Scott Shaw with the RPD Traffic Division.
Reno Police Department says during the event 113 citations were issued for various traffic related offenses as well as one felony warrant arrest and one misdemeanor warrant arrest.
"The fines are very steep, you can have your car impounded, you could spend time in jail," says Shaw.
The event combats the illegal street racing occurring in the region as well as several peace complaints from residents about street racing over the last several weeks.
Through this operation the agencies were able to utilize the RAVEN helicopter from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office to assist in the efforts.Â
Reno Police Department would like to remind everyone that street racing is illegal, very dangerous and will not be tolerated.
"This is not a closed course, it is not safe to be doing on public streets, there are innocent people around," says Shaw.
