The Reno Arch will go dark on Wednesday night to honor former University of Nevada-Las Vegas basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian who died on February 11th at the age of 84.

At the direction of City Manager Andrew Clinger, and with the support of Reno City Council, the Reno Arch will be dimmed for three minutes: from 10:30 to 10:33 p.m.

At that same time, participating resorts and businesses in Las Vegas will dim their lights in observance of Tarkanian. The timing of the dimming is set to coincide with the end of UNLV basketball's home game Wednesday night against Boise State.

“We thought it was extremely important to join this cause,” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve says. “Mr. Tarkanian is a true Nevada legend, and this allows us all an official, collective moment to reflect on his incredible influence on students, athletes, and sports fans.”

Two UNLV alumni, Tony Cordasco and Scott Gulbransen, started the movement for the dimming tribute on social media. Nevadans are encouraged to use the hashtag #AlwaysARebel for social media engagement.

Governor Brian Sandoval has also asked that lights be dimmed on the Capitol Grounds for those three same minutes.

Meanwhile, a public memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The free event will last approximately 90 minutes.
