Reno City Manager Sabra Newby has announced that she will be stepping down from her position later this year to return to southern Nevada.
She made the announcement in a letter to Reno City Council on Wednesday night. In it, she says her last day will be July 3, 2020.
Before coming to the City of Reno, Sabra was the Assistant County Manager of Clark County. Prior to that, she held several positions within Clark County, including Director of Administrative Services and Director of Intergovernmental Relations.
She was hired as Reno City Manager in May 2017.
Dearest Mayor, Council Members, and Fellow Employees; These letters are never particularly easy, but I am writing to let you know that my family and I have made the difficult decision to move back to Southern Nevada this summer. The City of Reno has been a wonderfully welcoming community for us, but we ultimately wish to return to Southern Nevada to be closer to family and friends.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the privilege of serving the City of Reno and its citizens. Serving Reno has been the greatest professional honor of my life. In my time here, I have witnessed the incredible passion and grit that our employees use in their service to this community. They truly go above and beyond in their service, often in difficult situations with limited resources. Together, we have achieved a new Master Plan, a Downtown Business Improvement District, plans for expansion of the Reno Stead Water Reclamation Facility, the creation of the Neighborhood Services Department, the evolution of the Community Homelessness Advisory Board, and the creation of hundreds of affordable housing units. There is still more work to be done, particularly in the creation of Reno’s first Public Safety Center since 1947, the reestablishment of the Moana Springs Pool, and the continued work to improve organizational culture and training for employees.
I am committed to helping the City of Reno through this transitional period to securing a new City Manager. With that in mind, I have chosen to give this notice far in advance of my last day, which will be July 3, 2020. Again, thank you for your faith in me and the opportunity to serve this amazing community.
