Reno Firefighters to Provide Emergency Medical Services at Closed Stations

The Reno Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 731 and the City of Reno agree to partially staff closed fire stations with medical services in Skyline/Caughlin Ranch, and Somersett neighborhoods.

The Reno Firefighters Association and the City of Reno reached an agreement Tuesday, July 19 to partially staff closed fire stations in the Skyline/Caughlin Ranch and Somersett neighborhoods with medical response units. According to officials these two-person units will lead to quicker response times for medical calls in these neighborhoods.

Officials say the agreement will assist in restoring full emergency response capabilities in the Skyline/Caughlin Ranch and Somersett neighborhoods. Still, these neighborhoods will have delayed fire response until the city can provide necessary staffing to support fire engines.

President of the Reno Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 731 Dennis Jacobsen says, "This agreement will allow the Reno Fire Department to staff these closed stations and provide improved emergency medical response services to the surrounding neighborhoods; however, fire response will remain a need and future focus for these communities."

"While we are pleased that the current Fire Chief recognizes an opportunity to partially restore services to the Skyline/Caughlin Ranch and Somersett neighborhoods, we look forward to being able to provide the same full emergency response capabilities that the rest of the city receives in the future."

According to the association, this agreement follows years of discussions and several failed attempts to negotiate and agreement with the City Council and fire administrations.
