The Reno-Tahoe area is one of four finalists to land a national championship you may have never heard of. It's called Cyclo-Cross.
“Cyclo-Cross has been described as the steeplechase with a bike,” said Coby Rowe with the organizing committee to bring the championship here. “It's a hybrid of road biking and mountain biking in the snow, mud, dirt, with obstacles.”
The championship would be held in January 2017 or 2018.
“It (racing) is generally done from September through January,” Rowe said. “The conditions in the winter definitely make it challenging.”
Rowe says if the races were to come to the region, Rancho San Rafael Park would be the ideal place to hold the event.
“At Rancho, we have very few flat spots, so there are a lot of climbs and descents, challenging terrain that can be really bumpy or sandy.”
USA Cycling is expected to make a decision by early 2015. Other cities include Bend, Oregon, Hartford, Connecticut, and Louisville, Kentucky
