On Common Ground is a local nonprofit that aims at helping people gain access to nutritious food.
More than one in five Washoe County school kids and more than one in five University of Nevada, Reno students do not know where they'll find their next meal, according to Washoe County studies.
On Common Ground wants to change these numbers.
"It's unacceptable that on in five local students plus many elderly and other residents don't have nutritious food to eat, yet 40% of all food in the U.S. is wasted," said Michelle Dobbs, director of On Common Ground.
The nonprofit hopes their classes will help decrease these statistics.
