Reno Police Maintains Good Relationship With Community After Black Lives Matter Rally

The Reno Police Department says the Black Lives Matter march in downtown Reno last Friday ended up being a safe and peaceful protest. But how are police relations among our community after a rally like this?

At a time of strained police relations across the country, the Reno Police chief says they have a good relationship with the people of Reno because of their policing strategy, centered around involving the community. Marchers at Friday's protest even thanked police officers for keeping everyone safe.

"That just speaks to the professionalism of the men and women of the Reno Police Department and the unique community that we have that supports our police department. So it was really nice to hear those comments," said Chief Jason Soto, with the Reno Police Department.

The police department met with organizers of the protest before and after the event to ensure the demonstration would go smoothly. And it did. There were no arrests and the protesters were peaceful according to RPD. Chief Soto says it's his department's job to look over the community at events like this.

"We want to make sure that they feel safe. If they don't and they see something that just doesn't feel right or look right, just notify us and we will make sure that we take care of whatever those issues may be," said Soto.

This upcoming Friday there is another Black Lives Matter rally planned in Sparks.
