It's been almost a week since recreational marijuana went on sale in Nevada, and if you've driven past any of the local dispensaries, you may have noticed the constant lines out the doors.
Blüm Dispensary officials said they expected about a 250 percent increase in business with recreational sales, but on the first night, they had a 700 percent increase. They do expect that number to taper off somewhat, but the huge showing leaves no doubt about the popularity of this new industry.
Now, they just have to figure out how to get enough supply to keep up with the demand.
"We knew that there was going to be a run for product," Blüm Director of Retail Operations Mikel Alvarez said, "so we've made a huge move into acquiring those products so that we can service both our medical patients and our new patrons."
Alvarez said they're not running out of product yet, but the distribution issue will need to be worked out. Liquor distributors have been fighting to expand their business to marijuana as well, but that has been tied up in the courts.
In the meantime, Blüm expects a wide range of new customers, from casual users to curious first-timers. For those new users, they have some advice.  Â
"Strains nowadays are through the roof," Blüm Dispensary Manager Lucas Farrell said. "They can get up to 30 percent, whereas back in the day, they were like five to 10 percent THC. So you definitely want to take it easy. You don't want to overdo it."
Farrell said a good rule of thumb is to start small, especially with edibles. He said to pay attention to the dosage on the label, and start with just five milligrams of THC over two hours.
And of course, don't expect to drive anywhere for several hours afterward.
