Investigators say police were justified in using deadly force against a gunman at last summer’s Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Officials said 19-year-old Santino Legan went on a shooting spree on July 28, 2019, killing three people and leaving 17 others wounded.

He was then struck and wounded by police fire, before taking his own life.

A new report by the Santa Clara District Attorney says the officers put themselves in the line of fire to stop the shooter

By doing so - the report says they probably saved lives and prevented an even worse tragedy.

The DA who released the report Tuesday was looking into whether the office's actions were legal.

Investigators said earlier that Legan a list of more potential targets, including religious and political groups, as well as federal buildings and courthouses.

The FBI is still conducting a terrorist investigation into the incident.
