Precautionary Lockdown Lifted at Damonte Ranch High School

Damonte Ranch High School was briefly evacuated after a burnt battery emitted a “repugnant odor throughout the school” on Wednesday.

The Washoe County School District says the fire department found a “boiled over” battery hooked on a charger for a landscaping vehicle, before 9 a.m.

The school’s assistant principal informed parents through its Connect Ed system that “although the smell is still lingering, we are all safe.”

Classes then continued as scheduled.

Here’s the Connect Ed message that was sent to families:

Good Morning,

This Wednesday morning we started out with a repugnant odor throughout the school.  The fire department came and checked things out and found a battery which had been hooked on a charger which boiled over.  Although the smell is still lingering we are all safe.

School will remain as scheduled.

All the Best,

Shaun Finnigan, Assistant Principal
