The Nevada Highway Patrol says it handled a large number of crashes in the Reno area on Thursday.Â
NHP says the first large crash happened at approximately 2 p.m. on I-80 about four miles east of Sparks, near Mustang. The crash involved 20 vehicles including several semi-trucks with trailers. NHP says about eight people were transported to area hospitals. The eastbound lanes were closed for nearly four hours as crews cleared the scene.Â
NHP then responded to a separate 34-car crash on I-580 north near the Galena Creek Bridge at approximately 4 p.m. NHP says the chain reaction crash started when a sedan lost control on the icy roadway. Authorities say two NHP patrol cars were involved in the crash. This crash shut down the northbound lanes until about 7:30 p.m. NHP says it handled 17 crashes at the scene, and four people were transported to area hospitals.Â
The Nevada Department of Transportation says U.S.-50 ALT near Fernley was down to one eastbound lane after a serious injury-crash Thursday night. Â
NHP says three cars crashed near Farm District Road, approximately seven miles east of Fernley. REMSA transported four people to the hospital with serious injuries.
Earlier in the day crews shut down I-80 east of Fernley after a semi-truck and trailer rolled over in the westbound lanes. Crews also cleared a jack-knifed semi-truck on U.S. 395 Alternate north of Carson City.
Troopers say the roads are extremely icy, drivers are advised to take it slow.
