A Justice Department watchdog report finds the FBI was justified in opening its investigation into ties between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia.
The report finds the FBI did not act with political bias, despite “serious performance failures” up the bureau’s chain of command.
The findings undercut President Donald Trump’s claim that he was the target of a “witch hunt.”
The report from the Justice Department’s inspector general revealed for the first time that the FBI had also sent an informant to record a conversation with a “high-level Trump campaign official,” who was not considered a subject in the Russia probe.
The official was not identified by name.
The report, by the Justice Department inspector general, also found 17 'significant errors or omissions' in surveillance applications for Trump campaign aide Carter Page, but no intentional misconduct.
President Trump later responded -
"The IG report just came out and I was just briefed on it and it's a disgrace what's happened with respect to the things that were done to our country. It should never again happen to another president. It is incredible, far worse than I would've ever thought possible and it's an embarrassment to our country, it's dishonest, it's everything that a lot of people thought it would be, except far worse."
