Allergy Season In Full Effect

Allergies can affect people in different ways, and as Dr. Jeffrey Nugent with the Northern Nevada Allergy Clinic says, the autumn months are a common time for people to have symptoms.

“Ocular symptoms, nasal symptoms, asthma flare ups, skin issues so as the wind kicks up and the plants are pollinating, people are unfortunately affected." says Nugent.

The plants Dr. Nugent are referring to are rabbitbrush and sagebrush. The two plants can be found all over the hills in Northern Nevada, and are beginning to pollinate during the fall season.

Nugent says although younger people are more predominately affected since they're more often exposing themselves to the outdoors, anybody can have allergies.

“Allergies actually have been going up as years have gone on, we've seen an increase in allergic disease, whether that's skin rashes with atopic dermatitis or nasal and eye allergies or even allergic asthma and food allergies, the incidence of that has been going up," says Nugent.

Nugent says some of the easiest ways to treat allergy symptoms are to buy over the counter medications, like eye drops or nasal sprays, or to avoid the pollen on windy days, by staying indoors.
