Saturday is 'Secure Your ID Day' in Reno

If you have personal documents and don't know what to do with them, don't throw them away, shred them instead during the 7th Annual ‘Secure Your ID Day.'

That's the message from Timothy Johnston, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau  of Northern Nevada.

“Last year, more than 13.1 million Americans were victims,” he said. “That is $18 billion in losses. This impacts a lot of people.”

Since starting ‘Secure Your ID Day' seven years ago, the BBB along with American Document Destruction Inc. has shredded more than 74,000 lbs. of documents.

Johnston recommends shredding bank statements, canceled checks, paycheck stubs, CD discs, and more. It is basically any document that contains information you don't want a stranger or a criminal to know.

“Nevada ranks fourth in identity theft,” he said. “That's up from last year. This is a real issue and we are here to help.”

‘Secure Your ID Day' is Saturday, October 18th, 2014 from 9:00 a.m.. -- 12:00 p.m..,  at the AT&T administrative building at the corner of Plumb Lane and Yori Avenue.

A person can bring up to three boxes/bags of documents.
