The billboard is located facing I-580, near Mt. Rose Highway, and some people say it shouldn’t be there at all. According to Scenic Nevada, even though this billboard has a permit, it goes against city codes.
"We had never seen a billboard in that area before, and we checked it out and looked at the codes and we feel that the permit where this billboard is, was granted in error,” says Lori Wray, with Scenic Nevada.
She says this part of town is protected historically and there shouldn’t be any billboards in that area of town.
Scenic Nevada says this billboard presents a visual disturbance disturbance and can become a trend, so they filed a lawsuit against the city of Reno and the billboard owner to remove the sign.
“It's in a spot that blocks scenic views and it ruins the character of that area of town, we are afraid that if the City of Reno allows one illegal billboard here, is that how its going to go up and down that corridor,” says Wray.
City officials say they have not been served with the lawsuit and they can’t formally comment until they do.
