Sparks Police Department is looking to hire. The department held a recruitment event Monday night. They are looking to hire 3 police officers, one dispatcher, a police assistant, and a police office assistant.
“We need a person be 21 years of age. They must have a high school education or equivalent. And 24 semester units of college,” said Spark Police Department Public Information Officer Ken Gallop. The goal of the recruitment event was to provide people with the information they need to determine if they want to join the force. “Pending retirements are the reason why we are hiring for the 3 positions,” said Officer Gallop.
Traditionally the department visits other events to talk to people about joining. But in this case, the Sparks Police Department has chosen to instead bring those who are interested, to police headquarters to get their questions answered. “You actually get to see the equipment and the building. And take a look at what is going on here at Sparks Police,” said Gallop.
Samuel Cline came to the event with the hope of getting one-on-one time with officers from different branches of the department.
“I wanted to get a feeling for what the department is like itself. What they think about the department. Other aspects of working here,” said Cline. He says this was able to accomplish his goal because of how the event was arranged. “At job fairs it seems to be a lot less time. You have less time to talk,” said Cline. A presentation was followed by officers answering questions.
Tyler Moser came to the event to find out all about the application process. “I just came with the mindset of what are the steps to get accepted. I wanted to get another perspective of those who have done it. They have answered the questions clearly,” said Moser.
The process is quite extensive. “After the application, individuals will have to take a written test, a physical abilities test, and a polygraph test. They will then go through a background process, which is an extensive background on the individual themselves,” said Officer Gallop.
