New homes in Douglas County are now required to have sprinkler systems.

While some oppose in-home sprinklers due to cost, deputies note that sprinkler systems actually save homeowners money if a fire does start.

In Douglas County, installing a new sprinkler system averages between $3-$5 per square foot.

Water damage cost from sprinklers averages $2,200, while water damage from a fire house could add up to $25,000.

For more information on residential fire sprinkler systems, the District recommends visiting the Home Fire Sprinkler Organization website.

For specific questions on the requirement, contact the East Fork Fire Protection District at 775-782-9040.
