Animal Services Sees Increase in 'Dog in Hot Vehicle' Calls

With triple digits in the forecast for most of this week, Washoe County Health Officials are reminding Northern Nevadans to take extra precautions to keep cool and safe.

“Heat can become very dangerous,” said Phillip Ulibarri with the Washoe County Health District. “If your body temperature reaches over 105 degrees, you’re a serious candidate for heat stroke and you need to seek medical treatment immediately.”

Signs of heat exhaustion include:

-Confusion

-Dizziness

-Headaches

-Muscle Cramps

-Nausea

Signs of heat stroke include:

-Severe Headaches

-Not Sweating

-Rapid Heart Beat

-Shallow Breathing

The Washoe County Health District recommends drinking plenty of fluids each day.

“It's very dry so your body tries to cool itself down by perspiring but when we have such dry weather and the wind blows,” said Ulibarri. “It's just sucking the moisture out of your system and that's why it's important to stay hydrated.”

Other tips include staying indoors where air conditioning is present. Ulibarri says places like a mall or the movie theater can be ideal. If you work outdoors, it’s important to pace yourself. Finally, keep an extra eye on people who are more vulnerable to the heat.
