It's the biggest event of the year for local nonprofit Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. The annual KTMB River Cleanup is on Saturday and they're expecting hundreds of people to volunteer their time. Â
There are sites along the Truckee from Lockwood to Verdi and plenty of different projects to tackle.
"It's amazing to see everyone come out and do so much," said Lorian McConnell with KTMB. Â "We gather tons and tons of trash, do invasive weed removal, plant tulip bulbs, and we wrap trees and we stencil storm drains to make sure they're ready to go so everyone knows that everything leads to the river. Â "It's amazing to see to impact our community has that day and it's one of my favorite parts of being in Reno."
Last year, nearly 800 volunteers picked up more than 12 tons of trash and more than 54 tons of green waste. A lot of corporate groups spend the morning volunteering their time, and there are even some family-friendly spots as well. In just a few hours, they really make a difference.
"The message that we're really sending on this day is that anybody can have an impact on the Truckee Meadows," McConnell said. Â "We all impact it in our daily lives, so coming out one day or two days of the year to get involved and clean it is going to be amazing."
