The Record Street Brewing company on 4th Street occupies a piece of Reno history - the old Alpine Glass Company, built in the 1920s.
The brewing tanks, kitchen and imported pizza ovens are brand new, but preserving the location's history has been a priority from day one.
"We started here in 2015," said President and Co-Founder Jesse Corletto. "We purchased the building and we've been working on it since then. But when people come in the doors, they're going to realize and respect the building for what it is, because we've kept the majority of the history in the building."
Corletto, a firefighter with Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, opened during a pandemic and is already giving back. The brewery is serving a special beer to help local firefighters and their families.
"We teamed up with the Truckee Meadows Firefighter Foundation and created a Scottish ale inspired by the history of firefighters and named after after a bagpipe song called "Flowers of the Forest," Corletto said. It's a song that's often used in the fire service. "The Scottish ale is a light, red-tone beer with a little apple and honey and a creamy finish. It's delicious, and a great Summer beer."
Twenty percent of sales from the beer go to that foundation. And while opening during a pandemic has been a challenge, the building has a lot of square footage, it's been fairly easy to adapt to social distancing regulations. Record Street is even helping out other businesses in the city's growing brewery district.
"We love giving back to the community," Corletto said. "For example, one of our neighbors had to close down because they don't have a kitchen. So we decided to bring them in to our tap room and sell the product here, and all the sales will go back to them. So it's been great on that end. We all try to help each other out."
There's plenty of space to grow in the future; there's talk of concerts and special events when protocols allow. But Old Reno will always be alive and well inside these walls.
"You'll see old signs, the tabletops made from the original wood that was in the building," Corletto said. "And the first beer we brewed here was Malt Rose Beer, which was brewed by the Reno Brewing Company back in 1903."
