The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man killed in a shooting in Gardnerville on Saturday night.

Deputies say 36-year-old Joshua McCarthy was shot to death by a homeowner while McCarthy was trying to break inside the home. Deputies say the homeowner did not know McCarthy.

Deputies say several witnesses stated there was an initial fight between McCarthy and another person at a separate residence, prior to the fatal shooting. These witnesses also indicate McCarthy had drinking prior to both incidents. Authorities say McCarthy left the residence where the first physical confrontation took place and a short time later the shooting incident occurred.

The investigation indicates that this was an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the community. This investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to contact Investigator Scott Battcher at 775-782-9905
