National Dog Day, celebrated every year on August 26, was founded in 2004 by animal welfare advocate, author, and pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige.

The day honors all dogs, purebred, mixed, working, and family companions alike.

Beyond celebrating the love and joy dogs bring to our lives, National Dog Day shines a light on the countless dogs in need of rescue each year, from public shelters to breed-specific rescues. It’s a reminder of the importance of adoption and supporting organizations that protect and care for dogs in need.

The holiday also recognizes dogs who serve selflessly every day: law enforcement K-9s, service dogs, therapy dogs, and search-and-rescue pups. These incredible animals risk their lives to keep us safe, guide those in need, detect danger, and provide comfort and companionship.

Here at 2 News Nevada, our crew is sharing special moments with their own pups, because every day is a little brighter with a furry friend by your side. From tail wags to slobbery kisses, dogs make life more fun, loving, and sometimes a little messy!
