Mayor Hillary Schieve requested the discussion about safety along the corridor following two deadly crashes this year.
The Reno Police Department said there are a lot of other crashes along major roads, not just McCarran, but for the meeting's sake they gave a report on crashes on this main road in Reno only.
Chief Kathryn Nance this the Reno Police Department says there were 247 crashes on McCarran on the Reno side and four deadly injuries just last year.
They see the most crashes on this road on the U.S. 395, Mae Anne Avenue and Virginia Street intersections.
Drivers told us how they feel.
"I've definitely noticed a lot of chaos on the road sometimes, especially on North McCarran and Keystone," said Erik Clark, a Reno Nevada Resident. "There's a really bad sun blind where people can't see and I've seen countless crashes there. I've seen motorcycle accidents lately and I've seen people on the road not driving that good."
John Cruze, another Reno Resident says "I'm getting on McCarran over here on the spaghetti ,395, and the same thing, people merging on from McCarran going from the right and making a left. They don't look either."
Chief Nance said on Wednesday they got approval to use a speed tracker that also notifies the driver that they are speeding. This does not give citations, as giving a citation from a camera is illegal in Nevada. But it will notify the driver they were going too fast.
Chris Johnson, Public Information Officer for the Reno Police Department says “We have seen an increase in speed on the McCarran loop, so individuals are using McCarran to drive faster. The roads are wider, they think they can drive the speed limit that you would normally be able to drive on the highways but that’s just not the case.”
He also adds “As we have more individuals moving and visiting and being here in Reno you do have an increase in number of vehicles on the road, and as a consequence you’re going to have an increase in crashes and it’s a consequence that we don’t want to see but it is the reality of what’s happening.”
