Students at Sparks High School are being rewarded on Thursday for their reading accomplishments through a longtime school tradition that gives children the chance to win cars, electronics, and other prizes.

The school’s annual “Read for the Ride” giveaway recognizes students who successfully read authentic literature throughout the school year.

The 28th annual event includes the giveaway of a 2003 Blazer donated by the City of Sparks with a listed value of $3,000. A 2000 Jeep Cherokee donated by the McClelland Literacy Foundation, valued between $2,000 and $3,000, will also be awarded.

Students also have the chance to win two iPads donated by the McClelland Literacy Foundation and a laptop valued at $490.

Organizers said the event celebrates a year of work toward improving reading skills at Sparks High.

Support for the giveaway came from the McClelland Labs Golf Tournament, the City of Sparks, Nevada Auto Sound, and Sam’s Sparkle Shop.
