Reno Police say they have been receiving reports of a new rental scam affecting our community.
In this most recent version, police say suspects are advertising properties for rent on sites like Craigslist and claim to be out of town, but encourage the victims to take a look at the property. If they like the property, the suspect requests the victim send them a security deposit and sometimes first month's rent over Zelle, a digital payment app. The properties are typically listed for less than average rental rates, making it more appealing to potential victims. Unfortunately, victims are not reimbursed for the fraud scams as the payments are not insured.
The Reno Police Department warns people to use caution when looking for rental properties where the owners/agents are not present and request payment via a digital payment app.
