The wet weather continues to complicate things for drivers. It's also making things difficult for Washoe County as they clean up from the last storm, and prepare for a potential new one.
As people made their way around town Monday night, one thing became clear: the roads are finally clear of snow after nearly a week of it. Other storms however are on the way. Washoe County says its efforts to prepare for the storms are hampered by the rain.
"If its rain, our brine laying activity is usually not very effective cause it gets washed away. So we're really watching the weather to determine if we can brine. If the temperatures stay hot which it looks like it may, then we will consider spraying. If it rains then we won't,” said Washoe County Operations Division Director Eric Crump.
The puddles and wet pavement left over from the snow are also an obstacle “It’s a problem especially if there's any standing water and if these temperatures drop. So we're watching the temperatures very closely. But ice would definitely be a concern if we get into these below freezing temperatures,” said Crump.
The rain followed by ice could then end up making snow build up on the streets even worse. “When the freezing asphalt doesn't get a chance to warm up, the snow will stick pretty quickly. You get instant dangerous conditions,” said Crump.
Washoe County suggests that people pick specific times to get their driving done. “Watch for those roads to be slick. My suggestion is to drive during the daytime,” said Crump.
Washoe County also suggests that people plan ahead. “People should use days like Tuesday and Thursday to do your errands and get things done. You don't want to be out on the road when there are predictions and forecast for snow,” said Crump.
Washoe County says they are still trying to clear snow in the higher elevation areas like Incline Village and Verdi.
