Firefighters in Carson City are conducting live fire exercises on the Northern Nevada Children's Home Cottages all this week.

The effort started on May 28th and is expected to be completed by October 24.

The Carson City Fire Department will do their planned demolition on the corner of 5th Street and Roop.

Police want to warn people to not call 9-1-1 as this fire is a controlled burn.

The fire department also will be monitoring the smoke in the area as well.

According to interim Fire Chief Kevin Nyberg, he feels this type of training is more valuable to his crews.

"Crews get to see how a fire actually responds to a building, and we just don't get to see these opportunities very much. This partnership with the state is just invaluable with what our crews actually get to see."

Nyberg also explained that usually this situations are simulated and emphasized how important this hands on training is for his crew.

The State conducted a remembrance ceremony on August 27th as a tribute to those who were impacted by the Northern Nevada Children’s Home Cottages.
