President Biden is expected to designate Avi Kwa Ame as the country's next national monument next week.Â
Avi Kwa Ame, or Spirit Mountain, covers nearly 450,000 acres of land in southern Nevada. It's a sacred site for the Fort Mojave and other Native American tribal nations.Â
This will mark the largest area President Biden has placed under national conservation since he took office.Â
Designating the national monument could expand habitat areas for a number of species including bighorn sheep, deer and several types of birds.Â
President Biden also announced new steps to establish uniform standards for federal agencies to consult with tribes, as well as a plan to revitalize Native languages and new efforts to strengthen the tribal rights outlined in existing treaties.
The Biden administration said its goal is to build on previous progress and create opportunities for lasting change in Indian Country. But the lasting nature of Biden's commitments is not guaranteed without codified laws and regulations.
