Election day is less than a month away, and mail-in ballots are making their way into local mailboxes.
The RWashoe County egistrar of Voters’ office is preparing several things, including sending out mail-in and sample ballots and testing each and every ballot marking device, making sure they work perfectly before early voting begins.
“We're testing that the accuracy that when we mark a ballot on the screen, it actually is marking it properly, and then when you are printing that ballot, those results are the expected results that they should be once you scan that ballot into the scanner,” said Andrew McDonald, the Washoe County Registrar of Voters.
Those checking the devices build each one, then go through a checklist of scenarios to make sure it's working as it's supposed to. Then they place security seals on them and repack them.
For folks looking to vote by mail, those ballots will be mailed out this week. McDonald asks the community to fill those out and turn them in to an approved drop box as soon as possible to help speed along releasing the results on election night.
Sample ballot booklets have already been sent out and may arrive as early as today.
“There's an insert for the kind of sample ballot, if you will, inside,” said McDonald. “They could mark that and bring that with them, and then they can transfer those votes to an in-person machine.”
Sample ballot booklets include the actual sample ballot insert, as well as information on questions, candidates, voting centers, and more.
The samples for this election cycle also have an explanation for the new ADA curbside voting and several other marketing campaigns. Washoe County is the first county in Nevada to implement ADA curbside voting.
