Washoe County schools are set to start classes one week from Monday. Kindergarten students will start one week later, on the 24th.

The school district's plan includes in-person learning for elementary schools and hybrid learning model for middle and high schools.

When it comes to the health of students, many are wondering what will happen if a child or a teacher tests positive for COVID-19.

According to the district, at the elementary level, it will mean the whole class will be excluded, which means they will not go to school and transition to online learning. In middle schools or high schools they will ask for 72 hours of closure so they can investigate and do contact tracing.

"If we are investigating a positive case, we want to know to know how long they were in contact with that person, who is potentially ill, was it more than 15 minutes? If so, you will probably be excluded for 14 days," says Margaret Allen, Student and Health Services Director.

If a child tests positive, they will be excluded from the class for a minimum of ten days. That same student will have to be 24 hours symptom-free and fever-free without using any medication, to be able to come back.

Classmates and staff who were exposed to a positive case of COVID-19 will be quarantined for 14 days.Â
