Tuesday dozens of students who will attend the new Sky Ranch Middle School in Spanish Springs got to sign their name on the final steel beam, before contractors put that beam into place to complete the structure of the school.
While this a a major phase to complete during the construction process, there's a long way to go.
"We're really only about 50 percent complete with the school,"Â Project Manager for Core Construction Kurt Parriott says. "We have a lot more to do around the exterior including metal wall panels and glass and glazing and curtain wall systems."
While plenty has to be done on the outside, they hope to finish that up soon, since there's even more work to do on the interior.
"But what's nice with where we're at is that we'll be dried-in hopefully by Christmas," Parriott says. Dried-in means the building is sealed so they can work on the interior no matter the weather. "And we'll be ready to rock and roll on the interior."
Construction began last year, but trustee for WCSD Veronica Frenkel says the effort for this school started back in 2016.
"It started with the voters giving us the authority with WC-1," Frenkel says. "To be able to fund a school construction which is so desperately needed in this area with it's significant overcrowding in our elementary and our middle schools."
As a result of Sky Ranch Middle School opening in 2019, Shaw Middle, Mendive Middle, and Sparks Middle will get relief from overcrowding.
Van Gorder Elementary, Jesse Hall Elementary, Sepulveda Elementary, Spanish Springs Elementary, and Bud Beasley Elementary.
