Officials with the Washoe County School District (WCSD) say they have no planned school closures at this time despite COVID-19 fears.
They said all school district and non-district sponsored athletics, extra-curricular activities, assemblies, practices and events are suspended effective Monday, March 16 until further notice.
They also released this list of measures, also to take effect on Monday:
- All District sponsored travel is suspended until further notice. Â
- Activities and events scheduled toward the end of the school year, including graduation ceremonies, will be evaluated as we progress through the situation. Â
- All intersession and curriculum-based activities will continue as scheduled over Spring Break. Â
- All previously scheduled Spring Break childcare related camps will continue to support family needs for access to daycare.Â
To stay up-to-date, WCSD has set up a COVID-19 website here.
The Lyon County School District has also released a statement regarding school events.Â
The Nevada Association of School Superintendents (NASS) has issued a joint statement regarding non-essential school events, which LCSD will be implementing and following.
NASS, LCSD and individual Nevada school districts are united in taking the following actions out of an abundance of caution and in an attempt to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases:
• All school, district, and non-district sponsored athletics, extra-curricular activities, assemblies, practices, and events are suspended effective Monday, March 16, 2020 until further notice.
o NASS and district superintendents will work with NIAA officials for future guidance and support.
o At this moment, parent-teacher conferences scheduled for April 1-2, 2020 will proceed as scheduled.
o Activities and events scheduled later in the school year, including graduation ceremonies, will be evaluated as we progress through this situation.
• The travel restrictions instituted on district-sponsored student and staff travel remain in effect.
• At this time, essential programs that provide for after-school care (i.e. Boys & Girls Club, tutoring, etc.) will continue operating to support students and families.
• LCSD has increased the cleaning of high touch surfaces, as a proactive approach to preventing the possible spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. LCSD has also secured additional cleaning materials should they be necessary.
• LCSD continues to refine its coronavirus response plan with all departments and outside officials.
At this time, there continues to be no confirmed cases of COVID-19 within LCSD.Â
