On Saturday, the Cherrick family home in Sparks got a makeover. The family of seven is the most recent recipient of the "Paint it Forward" program through Kelly Brothers Painting.
"We got inspired a few years ago through fellow painters in L.A. who do a similar program and it kind of hit close to the heart," said William Kelly of Kelly Brothers Painting. "We wanted to do something in our area to give back to the community. We're painting the whole exterior. We picked a new color, this awesome gray with white trim and we're repainting the front door with a teal color; we're really freshening it up, it's going to look nice."
Community members nominate those they think deserve a little help with their homes. The Cherrick family, with five kids, is always on the go.
"My reaction was mostly amazement because this is something we needed done someday," said Michelle Cherrick. "It's one of those things that needs to be done, an adult responsibility, but it's bottom of the list. Soccer practice, baseball practice, we keep saying, okay when they're grown and in college we'll paint the house!"
Ryan Cherrick is a Marine Corps veteran and currently works for the VA Police in Reno.
"I was completely taken aback," he said. "I had no idea this was in the works and I was incredibly surprised and relieved I didn't have to take a couple weeks off of work get out the ladder and do it myself; it's really awesome."
Kelly Brothers sponsors several Paint it Forward projects every year.
"To give back to the community is such a great thing for the company and people in need," said Kevin Kelly of Kelly Brothers Painting. "They have a great family and Ryan gives so much to this community, it was the least we could do to help this family."
