The Nevada Department of Transportation says that the extended U.S. 395 North Valleys closures and new lane shifts are expected to being next week, possibly on Monday, September 9.

Drivers should expect an extended closure of the northbound U.S. 395 exit 72 off ramp and North Virginia Street on ramp to northbound U.S. 395 in Panther Valley as the new braided ramp is constructed.

The following is a breakdown of lane and speed reductions that will be taking effect:

24/7 - Lane Shifts and Speed Reductions

  • Northbound U.S. 395 remains reduced to two lanes 24/7 from just north of Oddie Boulevard to Golden Valley Road through mid-2025 as sections of the highway and bridges are removed and reconstructed, retaining walls built and other improvements made.
  • Highway lanes are slightly reduced in width and shifted.
  • Speeds are reduced to 55 miles per hour 24 hours/7 days a week through the work zone.

Lane and Ramp Closures

  • Additional overnight lane closures continue, with highway lanes reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction:
    • Northbound U.S. 395: lanes reduced between 8 p.m. and 11 a.m.
    • Southbound U.S. 395: lanes reduced between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Intermittent ramp closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday evenings through Saturday mornings. Detour routes will be marked.
  • Virginia Street on-ramp to southbound U.S. 395 in Panther Valley is closed through late 2024.
  • Construction schedule is weather permitting and subject to change.

NDOT says that with major construction scheduled to take place along this section of the highway through the end of 2025, drivers are encouraged to sign up for the following traffic alerts:

  • Text “NorthValleys” to 866-540-8466 to sign up for construction text alerts.
  • Contact the project hotline at (775) 636-4202.

NDOT says they will continue to make the following project improvements to increase traffic mobility and safety on the heavily-traveled section of the highway:

  • Add additional lane to southbound U.S. 395 between north McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road. This new lane will be constructed in the median of the southbound freeway.
  • Construct additional merge (auxiliary) lanes between each freeway ramp in both directions of U.S. 395 between north McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road.
  • Construct a “braided” freeway ramp along northbound U.S. 395 between the Panther Valley on-ramp and Golden Valley Road for safer, smoother traffic flow, similar to southbound I-580 ramps at Mill and Second streets.
  • Repave both directions of U.S. 395 between north McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road.
  • Construction of five new sound walls, retaining walls, and aesthetic elements highlighting the gateway to the City of Reno and roadside ground treatments such as native plantings and rock.
  • Add paved shoulders of up to 12 feet to provide room for enhanced incident management and roadside response

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 3:

There is no exact hour schedule for the final U.S. 395 North Valleys lane switches that are happening today, but an overview has been provided.

Crews are placing new striping through the work zone today, and the final traffic switch—switching drivers from the previous lanes to newly-constructed lanes—will fully be in place Wednesday evening.

Drivers are reminded to drive attentively and expect changes in the work zone as work to enact these lane switches takes place today and tomorrow.

ORIGINAL STORY

Northbound lanes will see some shifting through the U.S. 395 work zone in Reno's North Valleys beginning on September 3.

This change comes as the construction of new freeway lanes continues.

NDOT crews have placed 40,000 square yards of new concrete paving to construct the two outside lanes, along with 450,000 pounds of reinforcing steel and 2,400 cubic yards of concrete to construct retaining walls.

On September 3, northbound traffic will be switched to travel on the two newly-finished lanes while the crews reconstruct additional lanes on the northbound side.

The northbound U.S. 395 on and off ramp to Dandini Boulevard will reopen on Thursday morning, September 5.

Drivers should keep a look out for the start of an extended closure of the northbound U.S. 395 exit 72 off ramp and North Virginia Street on ramp to northbound U.S. 395 in Panther Valley.

This is happening while a new braided ramp from northbound U.S. 395 to Golden Valley Road is built.

This future ramp will carry northbound U.S. 395 off-ramp traffic exiting to Golden Valley Road over the existing Panther Valley ramp.

Speeds will remain reduced to 55 mph 24/7 through the work zones.
