They said 60-year-old Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael died in the crash.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office says two people are dead after a single-engine plane crash near Truckee Tuesday morning.

The FAA says the single-engine Navion-B crashed on the west side of Highway 267 near Mercer Flats one mile south of the Truckee-Tahoe Airport in Martis Valley.

A spokesperson tells us the plane was heading east when the incident happened just after 7:33 a.m. Emergency crews arrived on scene within two minutes of the first 911 call.

Authorities say the pilot reported engine problems and was trying to return to the airport when the crash occurred.

Authorities say Care Flight, Truckee Fire, and local law enforcement are also on scene.

One other victim was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with critical injuries.

The FAA, NTSB and the Placer County Sheriff's Office will investigate.
