WCSD S.H.A.R.E. Committee Discusses Lessons on Sex Trafficking

The Washoe County School District is still looking to revise its curriculum for the Sexuality Health and Responsibility Education program, or S.H.A.R.E.

On Wednesday, the S.H.A.R.E. Advisory Committee discussed a number of topics that could be updated for the middle school curriculum. The committee also discussed whether to include the topic of Sex Trafficking in the S.H.A.R.E. curriculum for 7th Grade, 8th Grade, neither, or both.

"Conversation at the district level was perhaps maybe we leave it out of S.H.A.R.E. to keep it out of the S.H.A.R.E. box so more of our students are exposed to that information." said Rochelle Proctor, the school district's S.H.A.R.E coordinator.

A main concern was that if the topic was limited to a S.H.A.R.E. lesson, that it would be the only time students would learn about the topic, and that topic would be limited to students whose parents choose to opt-in the S.H.A.R.E. curriculum.

Currently 8% of students are opted out of S.H.A.R.E. But many on the committee agree that sex trafficking is something students should be aware of.

"Just the basic knowledge as far as, perhaps what it looks like if they're being groomed. Things to look out for, warning signs, or as far as the adults, what to look out for in students." said Proctor.

The S.H.A.R.E committee chose to revisit the topic at a later meeting.

WCSD officials say the district is always looking for public input. To learn more you can click here.
