Wild Turkeys Call Reno Suburb Home

The Nevada Department of Wildlife releases turkeys periodically in rural locations around the state of Nevada and a family of turkeys have taken up residence in a Reno suburb.

After NDOW releases the turkeys into the wild, they spread out and move to a location that they find comfortable. There has been other recent sightings in Lake Tahoe and Peavine. After canvasing Mogul, Channel 2 found a flock of 4 turkeys wandering around.

"Turkeys like tall trees, they like water sources, and in the Mogul area that is what they have. The Truckee River and the tall Cottonwoods there," said Chris Healy with the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

It is mating season so the tom, or the adult male turkey, is very protective of the hen from other male turkeys.

We spoke with residents and they suspect that the tom is from an NDOW stocking in Verdi, which is only a few miles from Mogul. That is when the community stepped up to help the lonely tom. They then had a few chicks. The Mogul community works together to keep these birds in the area.

"We all watch out for them. We're careful of driving because they do tend to dart out when they are fighting so we kind of watch out for them," said Gail Sims, longtime Mogul resident.

The residents we spoke to say that they're are not much of a nuisance other than aggravating some dogs and cats. Also, they do leave a little bit of a mess when they go to the bathroom.
