Winter has arrived and temperatures will be rather cold the next few days with highs in the 30’s on Thursday and Friday. There is a slight chance for snow Thursday, but most of it will stay east of Reno. This is a slider type system with the low coming down from Oregon, however, the center of the low looks to move to the southeast and mainly impact the central and eastern portion of the state. With a northerly wind flow there could also be some lake effect snow south of Pyramid Lake Thursday morning. If we get anything in the valley it will probably be less than an inch.
We didn’t really have a white Christmas in Reno this year, but the mountains got a decent amount of snow this Christmas. Mt. Rose got 15 inches of snow over Christmas and Northstar got a foot. Incline Village even got around 9 inches at 7,600' feet. If you plan on going skiing the next couple of days it will be windy with temperatures in the 20’s at 8000' feet.
Looking back at years past we’ve seen it all on Christmas from mild temperatures near 60 degrees to around a foot of snow in Reno. It’s a similar story for Christmas Eve. In the graphics below, snow years are in blue.
