The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reports a magnitude 4.8 earthquake located 24 miles southwest of Caliente, 100 miles north of Las Vegas and 46 miles northwest of Mesquite, at 11:47 a.m. on May 22, 2015. There have been reports of minor damage. An aftershock of magnitude 3.8 occurred at 12:05 p.m. and a magnitude 3.0 at 12:19 p.m.
The magnitude 4.8 event was felt as far away as Las Vegas and was relatively shallow. Reports indicate there were two short tremors that lasted for about two minutes, and a rocking motion for a few seconds. One report from Las Vegas said the earthquake shook the whole house, and felt like something crashed into the house.
Las Vegas news stations have reported they received reports from throughout the Las Vegas valley of people feeling the earthquake.
Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, said aftershocks are not uncommon and could be felt for days or months following an earthquake. He said residents should follow the lessons taught in the Great Nevada Shakeout drills of “drop, cover and hold on” when an earthquake occurs.
